Betting recommendation for the Vancouver vs. Anaheim game on New Year’s Day.
The Anaheim Ducks did not produce much offense during the entire month of December. In fact, there was only one game in which the Ducks scored more than two goals. But on their current road trip through western Canada, Anaheim haven’t actually needed much offense as two one-goal games gave them two valuable road wins over both Calgary and Edmonton.
Needless to say, goaltending has been key in Anaheim’s wins. On that note, John Gibson posted 14 saves against the Flames for the 1-0 shutout and followed suit with 21 saves against the Oilers for another 1-0 shutout on Thursday. Shots against Anaheim’s net have been at a premium of late, but whatever is getting through is also getting stopped.
Anaheim coaching will face a bit of dilemma on Friday as they travel west to face Vancouver. Coaches don’t usually like to use a goalie on back-to-back nights however Gibson has been so solid in net lately that you couldn’t really blame the Ducks if they went with him as they wrap up their current road trip on Friday night.
The matchup will feature two division rivals that both need wins. Vancouver recently lost to Los Angeles in embarrassing fashion recently, dropping a 5-0 result on home ice. The Canucks are currently on the outside looking in when it comes to the post-season picture. Now is the time of year when teams need to make a move in the standings to avoid being desperate at the latter points of the season.
Friday’s game will mark the third between the Ducks and Canucks, the two teams splitting their season series to date 1-1.
Anaheim could struggle with fatigue when they play the better-rested Canucks, even outside of goaltending. They’ve travelled a lot lately while Vancouver have been at home recently. Game time on Friday is at 7pm PT (10pm ET) in what will be a very slow night in the NHL.
Neither team can be backed with any kind of confidence as Vancouver have been lousy at home this year and Anaheim are only winning because of a hot goalie. The Ducks scoring, despite recent wins, has been as bad ever. The best line on this game is to go with the UNDER for total goals, with William Hill offering 4.5 goals at a nice +162 (about 8/5).
1 pt bet on UNDER 4.5 for total goals with William Hill at 8 to 5
