The last week of betting trends have favored the Carolina Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers, following last weekend’s conference championship results, were the favorite to win the Super Bowl over the Denver Broncos as soon as the entrants were known. The Panthers opened at a best price of -181 (about 5/9) with BetVictor last weekend. However, since the odds first opened on the market they have generally shortened on Carolina, something that I speculated would happen.
Writing about a week ago, I made the following comments regarding Carolina’s odds:
“Personally, my hunch is that Denver’s odds will drift while Carolina’s will shorten. The Panthers crushed their conference final opponent while Denver squeaked by. I think when the bettors log into their sportsbooks, those scores will weigh on their mind more than anything.”
Looking at the odds now, the Panthers are about 2 to 5 with most sportsbooks, including BetVictor, SportingBook, and William Hill. Denver are priced at +215 (43/20) with 888Sport and Unibet. In my view, the time to back Carolina at a good price is gone although I’m not backing away from them as my pick to win the Super Bowl. Instead, I think it’s time to look at the props.
I’m looking at next weekend’s Super Bowl as one that ushers in a new era of recognition for the best quarterback in the NFL. Tom Brady’s season is over and there are rumblings about Peyton Manning regarding retirement, a topic that he won’t address and shouldn’t at this time anyways.
The Super Bowl MVP usually goes to the winning QB and in this case that should be Cam Newton. The odds on him winning the award are -133 with Bwin (about 10/13) and I think that’s a good betting line. He has been central to every victory for the Panthers this season with his rushing skills particularly difficult to defend. In key short yardage situations, I expect Newton to burn Denver’s defense and to earn a lot of praise for doing so.
After all, an unwillingness or an inability to rush is what you find with a lot of NFL QBs. Newton’s willingness and ability to do so has set him apart and it makes him the most dangerous player in next Sunday’s game. I think the fans and writers that vote will want to recognize him accordingly.
Of course, Newton winning the award practically presupposes a Panthers’ victory so in many ways the bet is two-fold. However, if you have Carolina winning, as I do, then Newton is the clear top pick for the MVP.
1-pt bet on Cam Newton to win the Super Bowl MVP at -133 (10/13)
