NFL playoffs begin this weekend. The early game on Sunday will feature the Seattle Seahawks at the Minnesota Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings may have won their division last weekend, defeating the Green Bay Packers to do it. However, that doesn’t seem to have won Minnesota much respect heading into Wild Card Weekend. Playing from home on Sunday, the Vikings are considered underdogs as the Seattle Seahawks come to town.

Here’s a look at the straight-up odds for this game:

Minnesota to win, +200 (2/1) with William Hill

Seattle to win, -212 (21/10) with Betfair

Without much doubt, Seattle’s reputation as a previous playoff perform precedes them. The Super Bowl champs from two season ago almost won it all last year as well. That makes them two-time defending NFC champions – credentials that make Minnesota’s chances look bleak.

Furthermore, the Seahawks already own a victory this season over Minnesota. The ‘hawks crushed the Vikings back on December 6th by a score of 38-7. While the upcoming game promises to be a closer one, it seems that few pundits are giving Minnesota much of a chance. Writing at, Paul Barrett noted that virtually every expert with an opinion on the game picked the Seahawks to win.

However, what you have to wonder is how many of those same pundits would have thought that Seattle would go 10-6 on the regular season. Likewise, how many of them had the Vikings winning the NFC North?

Since losing to Seattle, Minnesota went on a bit of a terror. They played Arizona, the 2nd favorites for the Super Bowl, to a three-point loss in Phoenix. To close out the last three weeks the Vikings beat Chicago by 21, the Giants by 31, and Green Bay by 7 in Green Bay.

The Vikes vs. ‘hawks is a tough one to call, but the odds on the Vikes are redeeming in my view. Seattle have thrown in all kinds of surprise losses this season, so many that if they went out in Wild Card Weekend, maybe nobody should call it that big of an upset.
