Premier League Review 16/17: Liverpool

Liverpool’s Final Premier League Position: 4th

This Premier League Review sees Liverpool’s season assessed, ultimately it is a step in the right direction for the Red’s.

Klopp’s side came into the season on the back of an eighth-placed finish, a highly disappointing season.

It was a season that saw Brendan Rodgers depart, only to be replaced by the enigmatic German Klopp.

To secure Klopp’s signature was a coup, with the German enjoying an excellent career with Borussia Dortmund.

The style of play was a big attraction, with the high pressing style meaning Liverpool played to their attacking strengths.

This season was always going to be tough, with Klopp pitting his wits against the likes of Wenger, Guardiola, Mourinho, Conte and Mauricio Pochettino.

Ultimately though it is a season without silverware, they have qualified for the UEFA Champions League.

Great Start

Liverpool enjoyed an excellent start to the season, winning a seven-goal thriller at the Emirates in the opening game.

The next match epitomised their season, losing 2-0 against Burnley at Turf Moor.

They struggled all season with this problem, comfortably beating the top six sides but struggling against all the sides below them.

In the top six mini league, Liverpool were top by four points, winning five and drawing five of their ten fixtures.

Defeats against Burnley, Swansea, Hull, Crystal Palace and a draw against Bournemouth cost them dearly.

They finished 17 points behind Antonio Conte’s side, with a horror run in January all but ending their trophy hopes.

Cup Failure

Liverpool’s only cup success was once again the league cup, they were beaten 2-0 in the semi-final by Southampton.

Otherwise, it was a horror show for Liverpool on the cup front, crashing out of the FA Cup after a home defeat against Wolves.

Jurgen Klopp’s side crashed out of all the cups in January, with the results during that month (1W, D4, L4).

Top Stats

Phillippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane were Liverpool’s joint top scorers this season, with both scoring 13 goals.

Georginio Wijnaldum was Liverpool’s top assister this season, with the Dutchman enjoying 9 assists.

James Milner had an excellent season at left back, with the most tackles and most passes of any Liverpool player.

Dejan Lovren won the most aerial battles and had the most clearances, the much-maligned defender statistically performing well.

Their final points tally was 76, that was 16 points better than last season and four positions higher.

They have achieved that without any European football, juggling those extra fixtures with their high pressing style will be a huge challenge.

Transfer Speculation

Klopp has wasted no time in adding to his side, adding more quality in the forward areas.

They have signed the highly-rated Dominic Solanke from Chelsea, and more recently confirmed the £34 million signing of Mohammed Salah from Roma.

Liverpool have attempted to solve their defensive problems with interest in Virgil Van Dijk, but ended their interest after being reported by the Saints.

They have also been linked with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, they desperately need to sign a left back.
