Birmingham v Ipswich, January 23, 15.00pm
A big game in the race for promotion as Ipswich visit Birmingham. The home side are slight outsiders in this bout and can be backed at 17/10. Ipswich on their travels are fractionally favourites at 13/8. The draw can be backed at 11/5.
Birmingham had an unbelievable performance in their last fixture. They beat title contenders Derby 3-0 away from home in their impressive display, one of their best results of the season. This has pushed them to the brink of the play-off places, just two points adrift and have the opportunity to leap-frog Ipswich who sit above them in the league. In Derby’s heaviest defeat in the season, Robinson, Gleeson and Kieftenbeld all netted in the second half to give Birmingham the all important three points. They have some winnable games coming up so will like to continue their form and break into a play-off position.
Ipswich had a bit of a shocker midweek. They were beaten by league two side Portsmouth 2-1 in their FA Cup replay. Being knocked out of the FA Cup early sometimes comes as a blessing and curse in that they can now purely focus on the league and break into the play-off places. However morale around the club must be low after the defeat, as expected, and it will take a fair bit of character to come back from that straight away. Also the fact that they had to play midweek could play a part in the outcome of this match given that Birmingham have the advantage of an extra few days rest and preparation, as well as the home advantage.
Nevertheless I think Ipswich will be focussed enough on their promotion potential to put in a good battle this weekend. Most importantly I don’t think either side will be willing to lose any ground on the other.
Correct Score: 1-1 – 13/2
