Betting tips and match preview | UEFA Champions League
Atletico Madrid welcome Barcelona to the Vicente Calderon in the second leg of an all Spanish clash in the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Champions League.
The hosts Atletico Madrid come into this match on the back of a 3-1 win against Espanyol in La Liga, the perfect tonic coming into a game of this magnitude.
Their passage to the Quarter Finals of this competition was nowhere near as smooth as the hosts, with Dutch side PSV pushing them all the way in the two legs, with only a penalty shoot out win allowing Atletico to progress.
They are in mixed form domestically with a recent loss against Sporting Gijon costing them dear with the gap between themselves and Barcelona three points and they could have found themselves level with just six games remaining. As it stands they still have an outstanding chance.
They lost the first leg last week against the Catalans 2-1 but took the lead against Barcelona thanks to a great finish from Fernando Torres but a moment of madness from the striker has cost them both in the last match and in this match. His sending off ensured Atletico were always up against it and he remains suspended for this fixture as well.
A win would see Atletico register their first win in 8 attempts against the Catalans and they will be keen for history to repeat itself as their last win was also a 1-0 victory in the Champions League.
This ensured their progression to the final of the competition where they narrowly lost to bitter rivals Real Madrid.
Barcelona In Poor Form
The visitors Barcelona come into this match on the back of another disappointing 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad on Saturday evening and will be looking to put that result right when they face Madrid’s city rivals Atletico.
They come into this fixture in poor form, prior to the Sociedad and Madrid defeats they had drawn 2-2 with fourth placed Villarreal. They have won three of their last six and up until the Real Madrid defeat they were unbeaten in an incredible 39 matches in all competitions.
It has left their position at the top of La Liga in a vulnerable state and they will need to play very well at the back end of the season, not only to end this mini slump but also to remain on course for a Champions League and La Liga double. However a defeat against Atletico could lead to an implosion on both fronts.
They will be looking to build on their excellent 5-1 aggregate win over Arsenal in the last round of matches in the Champions League and they will also be looking to inflict a fourth defeat of the season onto Atletico.
The last time Diego Simeone’s men beat the Catalans was back in 2014 when Atletico progressed to the final of the Champions League, something Barcelona will be keen to prevent happening a second time.
A win would be their 27th against Atletico in 52 meetings, with 11 draws and 14 losses in all competitions.
Atletico head into this fixture with a record of two losses, one draw and three wins in their last six matches. Barcelona have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six fixtures.
Both teams are 11/10 on to score. The first goalscorer odds for Atletico are Antoine Griezmann at 5/1 with Luciano Vietto and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco at 15/2. For Barcelona Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at 4/1 with Neymar at 11/2.
The last time these two sides met in the Champions League Barcelona won 2-1 and the odds of the same result are 8/1.
