The pinnacle hour in American sports will come on February 7th, just under two weeks away. On that day the Carolina Panthers will meet the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco. Not surprisingly, as the Super Bowl is one of the most bet on sporting events, early odds are available. It’s also not surprising to see that the Panthers are the favorites.
Carolina enter the game at -181 (about 5/9) with BetVictor on the straight up line. Those odds are a far stretch shorter than what they were at the early points of the current season. According to my notes, Carolina were still 33 to 1 as late as Week 4 and maybe later. Denver enter the game as mild underdogs at +160 (8/5) with William Hill. The point spread for the game has been set at -4.5 with bet365, favoring the Panthers.
Some wonder why there is an extra week between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. One theory is that it gives the players an extra week of rest to ensure competitiveness. Another theory is that it is so the game can be hyped. Personally, I think it has to do with sports scheduling at the macro-level. The Australian Open finals are played in the weekend between the conference championships and the Super Bowl seemingly year-in and year-out. Could be that the powers that be don’t want to compete with a major tennis event – after all the Australian Open used to be dominated by Americans such as Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. While football wins over tennis in the USA, surely some fans would have their attention divided.
A lot of betting markets will open up for this game and betting trends promise to shift the odds around. Personally, my hunch is that Denver’s odds will drift while Carolina’s will shorten. The Panthers crushed their conference final opponent while Denver squeaked by. I think when the bettors log into their sportsbooks, those scores will weigh on their mind more than anything.
They certainly weigh on my mind although I’ve been recommending Carolina for months and months now. They’ve never let me down, including a 16 to 1 hit on winning the conference (early season odds and recommendation). Accordingly, I am sticking with the Panthers.
